Habit Training Tips

Train Smarter. Treat Better.

Good dogs aren't born — they're built, one treat at a time. Whether you're working on sit, stay, or "please stop eating the couch," the right treat makes training faster, more fun, and actually stick.

Why Treat Quality Matters for Training

During training, your dog is consuming a lot of treats in a short window. That means the treat you choose isn't just a reward — it's a significant part of their daily nutrition. Low-quality treats loaded with sugar, fillers, and artificial flavors can spike energy then crash it, making focus harder. Clean, protein-rich treats keep energy steady and focus sharp.

The 5 Rules of Treat-Based Training

1. Keep it small.

Training treats should be pea-sized. Your dog doesn't need a full biscuit to know they did something right — they need the signal. Small treats also mean you can reward frequently without overfeeding.

2. Make it immediate.

The reward needs to come within 2 seconds of the behavior. Dogs don't connect a treat given 10 seconds later to what they did. Timing is everything.

3. Use high-value treats for hard tasks.

Teaching "come" near distractions? Break out the good stuff. Our Chickpea Chicken Cordon Bleu nibs or Baa Ha lamb treats are the kind of reward that makes your dog forget there's a squirrel across the street.

4. Vary your rewards.

Don't use the same treat every single session. Variety keeps your dog engaged and prevents them from "holding out" for their favorite.

5. End on a win.

Always finish a session with something your dog can do easily. End on success — it keeps them confident and excited for next time.

The Dog & Whistle Training Lineup

  • Chickpea Chicken Cordon Bleu — cage-free chicken with upcycled chickpea. High protein, low guilt.
  • Baa Ha — ground lamb with blueberries. Rich flavor that cuts through any distraction.

Building a Daily Habit

The best training isn't one long session — it's five minutes, three times a day. Consistency beats marathon training every time. Tie a short session to something you already do: morning coffee, after-dinner walk, before bed. Three weeks of that and you'll have a different dog.
